What to expect from a kids yoga class

March 8, 2017

It is important to note that a kid’s yoga class is very different to an adult class. Adults are self disciplined and therefore choose to listen and follow the teacher’s instructions. Children are still learning this skill; so in order to keep them engaged the classes are focussed around a theme, such as ‘Summer Time’, ‘You Are What You Eat’, ‘Balance’ and ‘Strong and Healthy Backs’.

The class always starts with three big belly breaths and three Om’s.

We then move into a discussion about the class ahead and the theme. The aim is to set the mood as well as to educate the kids about the topics. For example, if the theme is You Are What You Eat the discussion will be around our digestive systems and how the food they put in their bodies can affect their mood, energy levels, concentration, performance, etc.

The first movement we do is a warm up – the Yogie Pokey, a take on the Hokey Pokey. We sing the Yogie Pokey and perform a sun salutation.

Next up is a breathing exercise. All the breathing exercises are designed to be fun and engaging to kids, as well as to educate them on how important breath control can be used as a tool in life.

 Breathing Exercise for kids

The main part of the class is a series of postures that are designed around the theme of the day. For the topic You Are What You Eat, postures are compressions on the stomach area that help to get the digestive system in working order. We explain the benefits of the posture as we are performing them.

Next up we have a little fun, which always comes at a perfect time because the kids may be getting a little restless after doing all the postures. This part often involves a short game such as musical yoga statues. The kid’s dance until the music stops and they have to get into a different posture they learnt from the day.

The last part of the class is a relaxation, which can involve a guided meditation, a Yoga Nidra or another activity that promotes mindfulness. The relaxation is extremely important and the kids get a huge amount out of this quiet time. We also discuss how they feel afterwards and encourage them to use the techniques out of the yoga room.
