The Benefits of Yoga for Young Bodies and Minds

July 11, 2017

The benefits of yoga for adults are widely recognised and chances are you have experienced these for yourself (if not, we are now offering yoga classes for adults). However, yoga is no longer just for adults. There is now significant research backing the benefits of yoga for kids.

Let’s face it, it’s not easy being a kid these days. The pressure of school, constant exposure to technology and less time spent playing outdoors, leaves little space for self-expression and reflection. As a result, young people are more stressed than ever, and it can compromise their future health. Stressors trigger the bodies sympathetic nervous system and overtime this can contribute to lifestyle diseases. Fortunately, pursuing mindfulness in the form of mediation and yoga can provide children with the tools they require to build strong, healthy bodies and minds, and avoid physical and mental ailments in the future.

“Studies of young people participating in yoga and mindfulness show improved stress response, depressive symptoms and peer relationships…”

-Orygen

Research shows that yoga can improve a child’s physical, social, emotional and mental health (See graphic below) (Hagen & Nayar, 2014; Orygen n.d.). Yoga’s emphasis on breathing techniques, reflection and inquiry into qualities such as honesty, gratitude and respect, differentiates it from other sports and activities. Yoga can equip kids with the skills they need to become future leaders and make the world they grow up in, a better and more peaceful place. At Little Warriors Yoga, we have created a nurturing environment for your child to develop these skills and benefits. We are growing strong, resilient human beings.
